Introduction
According to the booklet that comes with the deck:
“The GREAT ETTEILLA or EGYPTIAN TAROTS is not an ordinary game of divination. Its cards show mystical and allegorical symbols that go back to remote antiquity. According to transmission by word of mouth and old manuscripts these cards were first created by Egyptian priests in the time of the Pharaohs, they then appeared as illustrations in that great book called the Cabbala, and after that we find they were used by the Bohemians at the time of the Middle-Ages, then rediscovered in the nineteenth century and put into circulation by the famous playing-card manufacturer, Grimaud and finally to-day we have these cards perfected and clearly explained by experts in the playing-card manufacturing firm of J.-M.Simon. The GREAT ETTEILLA – owing to the centuries devoted to experimental methods on how to draw the cards, weaves together earthly materialism with its joys, hardships, worries and celestial spiritualism which hold the facts of our destiny that no human power can change. These cards therefore are a precious guide for all those who practise the Art of Divination as a profession and also for others who wish to have a clearer view of life.
It is the basis for the modern rider waite and thoth tarot decks and its creator Jean baptiste aliette was the first to give a meaning to each card.
Huge thanks to stolen-thyme.com who I have borrowed loads of information from. What I’ve done is joined the interpretations given in the book that came with the cards – which has some really specific meanings and expanded them with the meanings given on stolen thyme which are curated translations of the meanings given by Julia Orsini in 1850.
You will also see that a lot of the meanings are contradictory, which supports Crowley’s position that all things contain within them their direct contradiction in order to maintain balance.
The Cards
The GREAT ETTEILLA is composed of 78 cards, numbered from 1 to 78. The cards no 1 and n° 8 represent the man and woman consultants, but in a draw these cards n° 1 and 8 have also, like the other cards a particular significance. Each card carries with its title one or two general portents, synthetised into several words.
The first twelve cards (from 1 to 12), and the last
(78) have abbreviations and symbols that might seem obscure to the uninitiated. In fact these headings have no influence on the game and are in fact not related to cartomancy but to astrology and we should therefore ignore them regarding interpretation. For the sake of general knowledge we give a list below of the meaning and concordances of these cards.

Over the centuries, certain cards have been changed regarding court cards and their names. It is necessary to know their concordances so that maximum use can be made of the methods of drawing and interpretation of the cards.

A note on the Coins and Wands/Sticks
When we come to the suit of coins or pentacles you will see that unlike the other lower cards, these all have an additional image in the yellow box. So far, I’ve been unable to find anything which explains the meaning, but I’ll keep looking and researching and let you know if I find anything.
Meetings – Multiples of the same card
In a draw it is rare to find several cards of equivalent importance following one another. If this should occur no matter which way they are turned, either right way up or upside down, it implies a particular portent.
Four Kings: Honours and success in business.
Three Kings: Doctor’s visit.
Two Kings: Plans that can be achieved.
Four Queens: Pleasure and discussions (debate).
Three Queens: Possible deceit.
Two Queens: Frank and open friendship.
Four Knights : Happiness and success in love.
Three Knights: Good news.
Two Knights: Bad luck (especially with card 52).
Four Jacks: Intimate relationship.
Three Jacks: Quarrel.

In the definitions given below you must distinguish between
“with” and “near”
“With” means that the accompanying card is next to the drawn card. “Near” means that the accompanying card is in the neighbourhood, perhaps two or three rectangles away from the drawn card either before it or after it.
NO 1 CHAOS
This card wherever it is placed always represents the man consultant, in some spreads this card is placed to represent the seeker, but this does not mean it is devoid of a particular meaning of its own. It replaces the hierophant or 5 in other decks. Illustrated in the margin of the card is the symbol for aries – the ram.
Isolated
R: Ideal. Moral qualities (virtue, kindness which benefits the consultant). God, spirit of God, all-powerful, eternal, unique, divinity, devotee, faithfulness, worship, master.
U: Wisdom. The consultant will show that he possesses intelligence and talent. Philosopher, philosophical, philosophize, sage, wisdom, knowledge, tradition, thought, meditation, contemplation.

R: With 47 means failure: With 71: slight loss, with 78: Error.
U: With 14, 17 or 18 it means a bad omen. Between a “King” and a “Queen” no 1 always indicates a forthcoming marriage, a happy affair, obvious success.
N° 2 HIRAM’S FREEMASONRY
This card gives you a clear-cut view of life. It often opens up new and interesting possibilities. It relates to 19, the sun and corresponds to the first creation in the bible. In the margin are the symbol for taurus, the first day of creation from the bible and the second element – Earth.

N° 3 THE ORDER OF THE MOPSES
This card signifies negotiations and talks. The accompanying cards influence the extent of these negotiations and talks. It corresponds to 18, the moon and to the biblical story of the seas, dry land and the plants that grow. In the margin are the symbol for gemini, the third day of creation from the bible and the first alchemical element – Air.

N° 4 THE SWIMMING POOL
Usually, from all points of view this card signifies loss, especially when it is the right way up. Nevertheless, it brings enough lucidity to face events. It corresponds to 17, the star and the second biblical creation story, the firmament to divide the waters from the waters. In the margin are the symbol for cancer, the second cay of creation in the bible and the alchemical element Fire.

N° 5 THE GOSPEL
Very important; this card is the emblem of success in love as well as in work. It corresponds to 21, the world and the sixth biblical creation story, that of the creation of beasts and man. In the margin are the symbol for leo, the sixth day of creation in the bible and the fourth alchemical element – water.

N° 6 THE SKY
A card that signifies a strong tendency towards mystery and all that is enigmatic. It corresponds to 3, the empress and corresponds with the fourth creation in the bible, where the sun, moon and stars were created to divide the day from the night. In the margin are the symbol for virgo and the fourth day of creation in the bible.

Although this card provokes hostility, it is not always bad for it also gives help and protection. It corresponds to 4, the emperor and the creation story of the sea and birds. In the margin are the symbol for libra and the fifth day of creation in the bible.

N° 8 EVE
This card represents the woman consultant with her good qualities and her faults, as with 1, in some spreads this card is placed to represent the seeker. This card corresponds to 2, the high priestess and the 7th day when god rested as indicated in 7 rest in the margin. Also. in the margin is the symbol for scorpio.

N° 9 SOLOMON
This card symbolizes Justice and all that results from Good and Bad. It corresponds to 8, justice. In the margin is the symbol for sagittarius.

N° 10 THE ANGEL OF THE APOCALYPSE
This card means you will receive good advice and your fits of bad temper will be restrained. In the margin is the symbol for capricorn.

R: With 45 or 47: you risk being poisoned or ill through eating mushrooms and shell-fish. With 25: the person you love gets in touch with you.
U: Near 16: Go to a doctor. He will be able to diagnose your trouble. Near 29: Do not shirk your responsibilities.
N° 11 DAVID
David, means strength, success in most things, power, unless the influences surrounding him are bad. It corresponds to 11, strength or fortitude. In the margin is the symbol for aquarius.

N° 12 MOSES
“Moses” is the card for politicians and diplomats. It recommends prudence with words as well as in writing. This card corresponds with 12 the hanged man. In the margin is the symbol for pisces.

U: With 18: Political denunciation. With 18 and 19 near each other: Loss of freedom. With 15: Vehement verbal confrontations. With 9,10 and 11: Do not deviate from the path you have chosen. Near 64 followed by a jack or a knight: Friends follow your policies.
N° 13 THE HIGH PRIEST
This card represents marriage or a love affair with its ups and downs. This corresponds to 6, the lovers.

R: With 14: A dark-haired person is deceiving you.
U: Number 18 brings you no happiness. But 70 and 57 herald a lot of happiness because of children and a return of affection.
N° 14 EVIL FORCE
Nearly always harmful, this card indicates violence; fruitless efforts, uncontrollable impulses. IT corresponds to 15, the devil.

R: With 24: Serious: Illness. Surgical operation. With 16: Love that ends in catastrophe.

N° 15 AARON
This card represents physical and moral health. It corresponds to 1, the magician, magus or juggler.

N° 16 THE LAST JUDGEMENT
This card invokes understanding and devotion. It can sometimes provoke suspicion and foolishness. It corresponds to 20, judgement.

R: Opinion. Your judgement is correct. Stick to it. Judgment, true judgment, good judgment, sane judgment, fair judgment, discernment, intelligence, reason, understanding, conception, view, thought, comparison, deliberation, opinion, feeling, false judgment, last judgment.
U: Arbitration. Ask a friend to give his opinion. His judgement will be approved. Judgment, decision, decree, ruling, legal outcome, arbitration, pacification, weak judgment, weak spirit, pusillanimity, injustice, madness.

R: With 36 and 51: you will win your lawsuit. Near 17: A dispute over an inheritance or a gift. Near 58: You will be called as a witness. Near 24: Difficult negotiations.
U: With 61 (U) you lose a lawsuit. Near 68: You get back some money.
N° 17 DEATH
Contrary to what one thinks this card, which has an unfavourable influence on its neighbouring cards, does not always predict death. However, one must be on one’s guard. It corresponds to 13, death.

R: Death. Fight against your illness, although it is serious do not think of suicide. Do not, above all, do anything rash. Do not make any plans! U: Incapacity. The diabetic has to take serious care of his health otherwise be risks falling into a coma. Nothingness, inertia, paralysis, paralyze, sleep, lethargy, somnambulism, evanescence, negation, null, not at all, annihilate.

R: With 4: Danger of death. With 20: If you are bitten by an animal take prompt measures against the bite. Near 35: Violent emotions, Apoplexy.

N° 18 JUDAS
Like “Judas” in the Bible the person who has this card is often a traitor but always near repentance. It corresponds to 9, the hermit although its meanings align with 12, the hanged man.

R: With 3: Do not expect gratitude from your children. With 24: A person in a higher position wants to harm you. With 16: you are disgraced. With 19: You lose your freedom. With 2: You unmask an impostor. With 20: You obtain satisfaction.

N° 19 THE CAPITOL
This card represents distress and misery. It corresponds to 16, the tower.

N° 20 NEBUCHADNEZZAR
A very good card for the consultant and also for the person in whom, he or she, is interested.
This card exercises a good influence upon the bad cards that surround it. It corresponds to 10, the wheel of fortune.

N° 21 REHOBOAM
Rehoboam is certainly not a good card. It encourages pride, revenge, and ostentation. This card corresponds to Trump VII, The Chariot

N° 22 THE MONARCH – King of batons
This “king” brings good news, in love and business. His influence mostly concerns country estates, land, forests, and farms. He is a man of the countryside.

N° 23 THE QUEEN – Queen of batons
